The Classic Milkshake

The Classic Milkshake
As many of you know, one of my passions is bringing families into the heart of the home, the kitchen. For Mother’s Day, my son gave me a retro green hand blender with a stainless cup. This was the perfect gift! In my home this summer, we have two teenagers and I love being in the kitchen and having everyone join in. We are perfecting the “classic milkshake.”

What is the “classic milkshake?”
It is a milkshake so thick that the straw stands up on its own. Sometimes it is referred to as a concrete because it is so thick that when you turn it upside down, not a drop will drip.

How do you achieve this classic milkshake?
You make it in a hand milk shake blender with a stainless steel cup using milk, ice cream and flavorings or sweeteners such as fruit syrup or chocolate syrup. It has two speeds and you churn to a smooth, frothy consistency. Hand blended milkshakes can be made from any flavor of ice cream. The secret is to make sure that your stainless steel cup is ice cold (it is best left in the freezer when not in use).

What else to add:
In more recent times, we have “add-ins” Adds-in may be chopped Oreos, Heath Bars or any type of chopped candy bar or crumbled cookies. Other add-ins may be chocolate chip cookie dough pieces or sprinkles sometimes known as “jimmies.” If you have a thick shake the “add-ins” do not sink to the bottom of the cup.

Additional tools:
A long spoon known as a Bistro Ice Spoon is a must. That way you can reach the bottom and get every last drop. The stainless steel container always makes more than enough for one and is usually larger than your glass...and the remaining is served in the stainless cup with a spoon.

One last tip, chill your milkshake glasses by putting them in the freezer.

I love to celebrate our summer holidays with a variety of classic milkshakes including strawberry, vanilla and blueberry. The red, white and blue colors are very festive and fun for our patriotic holidays and the hot summer days. It is also a great use of fresh strawberries and blueberries from the garden. You can layer in a clear glass and top with whipped cream, sprinkles and a cherry. It is a great way to create some new memories this summer while enjoying a delicious treat.
