Sunlight Meditation

Sunlight Meditation

The longer days of Spring not only offer warmer temperatures and lighter moods but also more opportunities for us to tune in to the natural wonders unfolding around us. Warmer mornings may inspire us to rise earlier and enjoy time outside. Morning light exposure helps to regulate our circadian rhythm and can boost mood and energy levels and possibly improve our sleep at night.

One of my favorite practices is a grounding meditation within the first hour of waking. This is when we receive the most benefits from intentional morning sunlight exposure. Direct contact with the earth’s surface also helps stabilize the circadian rhythm, promoting restful sleep in the evening hours. Although the following can be done any season of the year, Spring seems like the perfect time to create a morning meditation practice.

Stand in the grass in a quiet, sunlit place (preferably secluded) and remove your shoes. Soften your knees and allow the eyes to close. Take time to notice how the placement of your feet on the earth centers your body. Feel into the ground beneath you. Feel into the breath inside you.

Open your awareness to the natural environment around you, noticing sounds, scents and the warmth of the sunlight on your face. Open your awareness to something calling your attention. Perhaps a sound – perhaps your own stillness.

Open your awareness to something you are grateful for right now, right where you are. Acknowledge the value in the presence of this moment, and when you are ready, simply wiggle your toes and open your eyes.

Take another moment to experience your surroundings with fresh eyes and an open and grateful heart.
