Unfurl with Spring
The natural unfurling of Spring is one our bodies long for after a season of hibernation spent curled up seeking warmth. Vibrant shades of green emerge as the ground is warmed by the sun and nourished by the rain. As a dear friend of mine often reminds me, “We never walk into a forest in Spring and feel strain or force – as if nature is trying so very hard to grow with grunts and groans.” Rather, there is an ease of presence and growth. Nature reminds us that growth is a natural response to receiving what we need. Enjoy these opening stretches as you unfurl under a fresh green canopy.
Lying on your back with bent knees:
- Gently draw your RIGHT knee back to your chest. Switch to the LEFT knee, then both.
- Bring your RIGHT ankle to your LEFT knee. Reach through the window, and draw your LEFT thigh back. This is supine pigeon.
- With your RIGHT ankle to LEFT knee, drop your legs to the LEFT side so that your RIGHT foot stands on floor and your RIGHT knee is toward the sky. Here, you have the option to take your RIGHT hand overhead or hold your RIGHT ankle with your LEFT hand.
- Drop both knees to your LEFT side, and uncurl the RIGHT arm for a supine twist. (Option for eagle legs.)
- Repeat steps 2—4 on the other side. Hug your knees to chest again. (Option for happy baby.)
- Rest in the Spring breeze. You may want to prop a rolled blanket or bolster under your spine and/or allow the souls of your feet to touch and knees fall to the sides. Find the position that appeals to your body.
Happy unfurling, friends!
