The January Garden
When many people have long forgotten about the gardening season, here in our garden at Blackberry Farm we still have a number of Fall vegetable varieties that are still flourishing. Today, which is the seventh of January, we just finished harvesting two rows of Fall cabbages, which will be taken to the Larder and used to make sauerkraut.
Just a few days ago, I pulled up a good number of large white beer radishes, which when thinly sliced to form are accordion-shaped. Lightly salted, they a perfect addition when served with beer and bread. I enjoyed this combination several times during my stay in Austria in November.
Other varieties that are still available in our garden include the smaller varieties of red radishes, arugula, and purpletop and white egg turnips. We also still have a good selection of carrots, which can last until Spring if the Winter months are not too harsh.
