The Birds and the B's
These last days of winter are having a hard time letting go of their grip in the Smokies, but gradually nights will cease dipping below freezing and mornings will dawn without frost. The landscape is spotted with the bright crimson buds of the red maple trees, and the redbuds are just beginning to produce their stunning purple blossoms.
In the bare branches of other trees one can still see the skeletons of last year’s bird nests. Our winter migrants have begun returning home, and the newly arrived flocks will be doing some spring cleaning of their own, finding the old home place and collecting new materials for remodeling.
Guided birdwatching has become a beloved pastime of many Blackberry guests. It is fascinating to follow the behaviors and habits of these beautiful and unique creatures. A birding trip can be a surprisingly exciting adventure, full of suspenseful watchfulness, and maybe even a little friendly competition between participants!
Colorful, melodious, familiar or unusual, birding is refreshment for the eyes and ears. Additionally, of course, some quality time spent immersed in nature is good for the mind, body, and soul. One or two-hour guided birdwatching walks and workshops are available by reservation with our concierge. Armed with a pair of binoculars and a checklist, one can discover the delight of birding among the blossoms of spring!
