The Art of a Refresh
When the Blackberry Farm Design team set out to refresh the Singing Brook Cottages, the goal was clear: preserve the soul, infuse new life. Nestled into the wooded hills, these 12 cottages – originally built in 2007 – have long embodied a quiet, timeless charm. But even the most beloved spaces benefit from a thoughtful refresh.
We weren’t looking for a reinvention but more an evolution – honoring the familiar while layering in lightness, warmth and a sense of renewed beauty. Sometimes, the most meaningful changes come in subtle, deliberate strokes. You don’t have to take a space down to the studs to make it feel fresh and new.
For anyone looking to update a space without stripping it of its soul, the secret lies in nuance and subtlety: fresh fabrics, thoughtful color choices and art that has been carefully curated. It doesn’t take a renovation – just thoughtful revision.
TEXTILES: REFINED AND REFRESHED
Textiles are the easiest way to inject freshness into a space. Updating fabrics doesn’t mean abandoning character; it means evolving it.
Here’s how we approached it:
- Upholstery: We reimagined the existing furniture in rich, tactile fabrics – plush mohair, wool plaids with a modern hand, and updated Bennison prints that still nod to the English charm guests have always loved. The palette is grounded in muted natural tones, with a few well-placed pops of color to keep things lively.
- Window Treatments: Drapery was updated with new patterns and textures. In some cottages, we leaned into feminine florals. In others, we balanced the look with earthy tones, giving each space personality without disrupting the whole.
- Layered Accents: Custom cushions with hand-stitched details, alpaca throws, vintage rugs on benches and footstools, and small-scale prints on bespoke lampshades helped bring richness and variety. These are the kinds of details that catch the eye and invite you to linger.
PAINT: SUBTLE SHIFTS, BIG IMPACT
A fresh coat of paint is transformative, but don’t stop at the walls. One of the most elegant and unexpected moves? Painting the ceiling.
We painted the ceilings a dusty, historic blue, bringing quiet drama with a calming sense of sky overhead. We paired the Benjamin Moore Iced Marble on the ceiling with warm white walls and soft taupe for a fresh and peaceful ambiance.
Painting the ceiling a color (rather than standard white) subtly shifts the room’s architecture, drawing the eye upward and expanding the feel of the space.
BATHROOMS: CLASSIC TOUCHES, CLEAN LINES
The bathrooms became our primary focus for more structural updates, but even here, we kept the touch light and timeless.
We refreshed each bath with new tile and plumbing fixtures, letting quality materials do the heavy lifting:
- Tile: Classic white subway tile and elegant marble mosaic tile create a fresh, cohesive foundation.
- Fixtures: A polished nickel collection from Waterworks brings warmth and a refined glow, pairing beautifully with new marble tops for a clean and quietly luxurious finish.
EXTRAS THAT ELEVATE
Another key part of the refresh was the addition of filtered water stations in every Singing Brook Suite, making it easier than ever to refill your Blackberry Farm water bottle with fresh water. We also elevated the pantry spaces with custom modern artwork for a thoughtfully curated finishing touch.
THE TAKEAWAY: FRESHNESS DOESN’T MEAN STARTING OVER
A truly refreshed space isn’t about replacing everything; it’s about seeing it with new eyes. A soft blue ceiling, a thoughtfully chosen piece of art, and a few layers of curated fabric and texture can make a room feel completely renewed. Add in clean, classic updates to the bathrooms, and the space feels both familiar and revitalized. A space doesn’t always need reinvention – sometimes it just needs care, clarity and the right details.
Let the charm stay. Let the freshness in.
