Spring Your Plants to Life

Spring Your Plants to Life

There comes a time in most houseplants’ lives when they need an upgrade in accommodations to keep thriving. This means it’s time to repot! Repotting is an important part of keeping your plants happy and healthy, especially if the roots are getting cramped in their existing coontainer. Spring, it turns out, is the ideal time for repotting with the least stress to the plant.

When Jade Adams, plant specialist and owner of Oglewood Avenue, visited Blackberry Farm, she shared that repotting once the weather has warmed makes the move less stressful, helping to ensure the plant continues to thrive in its new container. As much as possible, you don’t want to disturb your plants in Winter, as it’s naturally a more stressful season for them. It can sometimes be difficult to tell when your plants need repotting. Watch out for these signs your plants will show when it’s time for a bigger home.

  • The roots of the plant are coming out of the drainage hole(s)
  • In some cases, the roots can grow too thick and cause the plant itself to raise up out of the container
  • The plant has stopped growing
  • The plant seems top heavy and is leaning to one side
  • The plant is drying out too quickly when you water it
  • You see some mineral build-up
  • The leaves have a yellow color even though you are providing proper water and light
  • The plant is losing a lot of leaves

So, if your house plants are ready for more space, now is the time! Keep them thriving through the next year with a careful Spring repot. Remember every type of plant is different. They have different needs for water, light and space. Always research what you’re growing to maintain the happiest, healthiest plants. Enjoy sharing or trading your plants? This is also a great time to cut off a bit of a favorite species and gift it to a fellow plant-lover for propagating.
