Riding with a Friend

Riding with a Friend
Robbie Ventura from Vision Quest Coaching told me once to “train high and low, not in the middle.” He said that if you always train in the middle, your body gets used to that level of exertion, and your performance plateaus. But when you train high, meaning hard, and then balance it with days where you train low, or easy, it keeps your body engaged, always wanting to become better to eliminate the “pain” of the high, and thus you become a better athlete. I have really applied this to not only my athletic pursuits, but to life in general, but for me the context that best exemplifies this thought is cycling. Cycling is a great way to get out and push yourself, both your body and your mind, outside of your comfort zone, which helps to fulfill the “high.” So as I ride and train, I look for those opportunities, and I usually find them when I ride with a friend that is better than me. It is on those rides that I am put in a situation where I suffer a little bit, but in the end I become a better rider. And the best part is, I then fulfill the “low” when I am the friend that is just a little bit better.
