Reach into the Fifth Limb of Yoga: Pratyahara
In our current nature of perpetually busy lives, endless to-do lists and sensory overload, a sense of overwhelm is easily developed but rarely addressed. We can be overwhelmed by constant sensory distractions of our external world coupled with unremitting internal, and often negative, dialogue. These many distractions can, in fact, be what blindfolds us from our truth, leaving us feeling lost even we scramble toward what we think is productivity.
The often overlooked fifth limb of Yoga, Pratyahara or “withdrawal of senses”, is a great approach to calm the nervous system, ease stress and anxiety, and regain a connection to self. This practice is perfect for everyone but especially those who struggle with tuning out and turning inward. A simple set of yoga blocks and an eye pillow or folded towel can help you ease into a beautiful state of introspection.
The practice:
Find a quiet space where you are able to remain undisturbed for 10-20 minutes, and dim the lights. Find a comfortable position lying on the floor. Decide if a pillow or rolled blanket feels nice beneath the knees to help soften the low back, and if you prefer, cover yourself with a blanket for added warmth. Place a yoga block on its middle height on either side of your head, just beside the ears. The idea is to cover the ears so external noises are muted or softened. To withdraw from the most active sense, vision, place an eye pillow or folded towel over the eyes. Begin to bring your awareness simply to your inhale and exhale. Notice the absence of sound and sight. Acknowledge the immense value in spending time in darkness and silence. Stay as long as you like.
