Memorial Day Slushy

April 27, 2011
Memorial Day Slushy

As part of our annual Memorial Day weekend celebration at Blackberry Farm, we're sharing the recipe for a festive favorite drink.

Red, White and Blue
2 cups of cut blueberries
1 cup of sugar
1 quart hot green tea
¾ cup apple juice
4 cups of cold water

In a pitcher, combine sugar, blueberries and hot tea. Set for about 30 minutes. Then add the apple juice and muddle all ingredients through a strainer until the blueberries look like mush. Add cold water. Freeze in a ziplock bag overnight so it is flat and will be easy to make in slushy.

Next layer:
1 cup strawberries
1 cup of water

Boil strawberries and water until you see the strawberries turn pink. Set aside.

Top it off:
1 cup of heavy whipping cream
3 tablespoons of sugar

In a medium bowl, whisk together cream and sugar until it forms a really thick whip cream.

Here’s where the fun comes in! Get your glasses out and fill the bottom of the glass halfway up with the blueberry slushy. Then layer that with the thick whip cream. (Make sure there are no air pockets and that the whip cream is leveled). Heat your strawberry juice up so it is very hot. Right in front of your guest, pour the strawberry juice over it. This will cause the layering effect. Because the strawberry is hot, it will eventually travel to the bottom and cause your mixture to taste like a mixed berry shake.
