June Bucket List

Here's what not to miss for the month of June! (in no particular order)

Dizzying Heights
Wander through the sunflower spiral in the garden. Notice how the statuesque stalks support climbing heirloom beans and gourds. We’ll send a search party if needed!

Float & Fly Fish the Holston River
This is our favorite time of year to spend a day floating the Holston River. It is full of hungry rainbow and brown trout, With potentially epic hatches , you can be privy to some amazing dry fly opportunities. You may also have the chance at a smallmouth bass, pound-for-pound one of the hardest fighting freshwater fish out there. This is a full day trip and leaves Blackberry at 8am, but is well worth the time for the fishing and the Tennessee River valley scenery.

Eponymous Fruits
Gather ripening wild blackberries from all reaches of the property and taste the wonderful flavor that gave our farm its name. Each morning we collect all we can to be made into preserves - in order to capture summer in a jar!

A Must Try
Chateau d’Yquem, the legendary dessert wine from Sauternes will be poured by the glass in the barn all this month!

Ride to Schoolhouse Gap
Now that the summer temperatures are settling in, a great morning escape is to jump on your bike, or one of our touring bikes, and head out for a beautiful 30 mile bike ride to Dry Valley. Along the way you will follow the Little River, offering a little relief from the heat with its cooler temperatures next to the water.

Kayak Hidden Lake Calderwood
Tucked away high in the Appalachian Mountains in between the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the Slickrock Wilderness lays a spectacular lake visited by few. The drive is a little over an hour, but alone it’s worth experiencing, heading first over the scenic Foothills Parkway and then over the fabled “Tail of the Dragon.” Once at the lake, enjoy pristine mountain views, gin clear waters, and solitude as you glide past the steep mountain sides and along the banks of this narrow winding lake. Due to the drive, this is a 6 hour experience and includes a shoreline picnic lunch.

Try a Riesling
The Summer of Riesling starts on June 21st! Riesling will be featured nearly every day throughout the summer.

High as an Elephants Eye
Can watching corn grow be exciting? Perhaps, when it is a Tennessee heirloom type grown in the ancient Three Sisters way. We plant corn, beans and squash together to harness its symbiosis – something our forebears figured out centuries ago. Stop by the garden to see this time-tested planting method in action.

What’s New
The new, expanded and updated wine list will hit your table, offering more choices and a deeper selection for all to enjoy.

Shoot a Teal Double… or Triple
We are constantly adding new things at Smoky Mountain Sports Club, Blackberry Farm’s private shooting grounds. This time, we have added a teal triple! Teals are clay targets that shoot high in the air, representing the flight of a teal duck. These teals cross from left to right, and force the shooter to focus on one before taking the other. And with a semi-automatic shotgun you can even try shooting all three!

Be the First to Try
Try our wild leeks that are gathered in the Appalachian foothills. Add traditional Southern flavor to a salad with sliced pickled ramps, or ramp jam on a burger hot off the grill, and be the first to try these new products.
