Garden Day at Camp Blackberry

August 1, 2014

Garden Day at Camp Blackberry teaches kids to appreciate what nature provides and the importance of staying green. We start our morning decorating seed packets, creating centipedes and assembling paper flowers. Once we venture down to the garden, Master Gardner John Coykendall mesmerizes the kids with stories filled with facts of the garden. In the Garden Shed, John teaches the importance of heirloom seeds and how to dry and save them. While receiving a tour of the garden, kids are able to pick fresh vegetables and dig potatoes! We make our way to the back of the garden to check out the beehives, while there, we explain how bees pollinate the garden helping our plants grow. After lunch we teach the importance of composting and organic farming. We take our lunch scraps to Blackberry Farm’s composting pile letting the kids experience the smells and sights of composting. Throughout the day we emphasis how kids can take the information learned at Camp Blackberry and apply it at home. Garden Day at Camp Blackberry is full of hands on activities combining learning and excitement, which makes it one of my favorite Camp days!
