Fast, Focused and Fun
For many people, the thought of trail running can seem intimidating at first: roots to trip over, rocks to stumble on, holes to fall into…how can this be a good idea? But with a little practice and a bold attitude, trail running can be a great way to add interest, variety and adventure to your workout week. Plus, it gets you out in the woods, one of my favorite places to be!

Pavement can be hot, tedious and pounding to your joints. Although trails may include obstacles such as rocks and roots, these actually serve as opportunities to sharpen your reflexes and literally keep you on your toes. For those of us who are “adrenaline junkies,” a good trail run is invigorating and exciting! I never get bored of running trails – there is so much to see and hear and breathe in. It is a joy to get lost in your thoughts on a trail in the woods…you just have to keep track of how to get back!

If you are interested in tackling the trails at Blackberry Farm, here are some tips:

The Walker Mountain Loop is a short but fairly technical trail that can be combined with the Overlook Trail to complete about 1.5 miles. I usually turn around and run it back the opposite way for a second loop as things look a lot different from the other direction!

The Trunk Branch/Walker Mountain loop is a longer option (about 4 miles) with a few more hills to push up and some fun creeks to splash through. If you want a flatter and shorter route, head out to Poplar Hollow and back. If you want Boot Camp style, try the Horse Slide trail! Intensely steep, but what goes up must come down!

Have fun and stay safe! Take a map, and let the Front Desk know where you are going and when you plan to be back. Better yet, take a guide!
