Farmstead Cobbler

August 9, 2011
Farmstead Cobbler

Over the last month, we've been running through the perfect moments to pick local blackberries, raspberries, blueberries and peaches, and we still have a month left in the region for most of these favorites. Although I would love to make a drink specific to each, that ends up being more time devoted to picking a name than actually making the drink!

A Cobbler is a drink suited to this type of interchangeable ingredient. Pick a fruit, some fresh herbs, muddle together and you've got the beginnings of a classic Summer cocktail. To really intensify and round out the flavors, you can add some fruit jams or jellies from this or last season (if they lasted this long!) – especially our Blueberry Jam. For the photo, we used blueberries and opal basil, but blackberries, raspberries or a "berry cobbler" work just as well with the same basic formula, as do peaches, nectarines and even watermelon. We adjust the proportions of simple syrup and liqueur depending on the type of fruit and because the crushed ice will dilute some. Be ready to experiment a bit with your own tastes in mind.

Farmstead Cobbler Basic Formula:

Liqueur (fruit or floral based)
Simple syrup (optional)
Lemon juice (optional)
Vodka

To make:
Muddle all ingredients except vodka in rocks glass. Add vodka and stir. Fill glass with crushed ice and top with fresh fruit and herbs if desired.
