Earthy Wines
The term “earthy” is frequently used to describe wines – as in, I want an “earthy” wine. But what does this mean in actual application? It’s been my experience that wines described as “earthy” are generally lacking in opulence. This means that all of the other qualities that are present in wine, but are sometimes covered up by richness and opulence are left exposed to be tasted by the consumer. Wines are generally fairly complex. Wines have fruit flavors, spicy flavors, organic flavors and a host of other qualities that make us like or dislike them. Many wines that are popular are rich with flavors of fruit which can mask the other flavors. I’ve found wines described to me as “earthy” are generally from cooler regions where the ripeness of the grapes isn’t as high and the other, more subtle flavors are at the forefront.
