Cult Classics
This month we are celebrating the classics. We thought that we would take a fun twist on that here in the wine world with a focus on “cult classics” from our country that we offer here at Blackberry Farm. These are the wines that achieved cult status some time ago and have maintained that same high quality and low production throughout the years to become not only cult wines, but also classics. To begin with, there is one undeniable wine that is almost universally known as being made in unattainably small quantities with demand that makes the wine even scarcer. This is naturally the wine called Screaming Eagle. It’s a Cabernet Sauvignon from Oakville in Napa Valley and there are precious few places where it can be found. Following this wine are a slew of incredible Cabernets that have achieved this status of cult wine. Namely, the Hillside Select Cabernet Sauvignon from Shafer winery in the Stag’s Leap District of Napa Valley, Barnett Family Vineyards Rattlesnake Vineyard Cabernet from Spring Mountain in Napa Valley and even the famed Ridge Monte Bello Cabernet Sauvignon from Santa Cruz Mountains. This last one is one of the most age-worthy American Cabernet Sauvignons and has been at the top of the charts since its first true release in 1962.
Then there’s the grape, Syrah. There are a few Syrahs made in this country that are also worthy of this Cult Classic Status. To begin with, the wines of John Alban, the original Rhone Style wine producer of this Country. His Single Vineyard Syrahs from the Edna Valley have few if any peers. Particularly his Seymour’s Vineyard Syrah named for his father. Moving further north to Walla Walla Valley, you’ll find the wines of Christophe Baron from Cayuse Winery. His Bionic Frog Syrah is highly prized and made in miniscule quantities that make it as hard as any wine on the Cult Classics list to obtain.
