Cooking with Kids
Kids love trying new foods when they have been involved in the meal-making process. There is so much they can do to help. Introduce them to new things by letting them help you.
Here are some kid-friendly suggestions that incorporate kids cooking with ingredients from our Farmstead:
Blackberry Farm Cornbread
• Crack eggs
*Always crack eggs in a separate bowl in case any of the shell falls in. If any of the shell falls in the bowl, use the other half of the shell to get it out as it works as a magnet.
How to crack an egg:
With one hand, hold the egg using your thumb and index, or middle finger, placing each finger on either end. Firmly tap the egg on a hard surface (never on the rim of a bowl because this breaks the shell into tiny bits that may go unnoticed into your food).
As soon as the crack has formed, use both hands and hold the egg from its tips, then using your thumbs, gently pry open the shell from where the crack had formed and allow the whole egg to drop into your small bowl.
• Pour buttermilk into a liquid measuring cup
• Whisk together the ingredients
Kid-friendly option: Add fresh grated sharp cheddar to your Cornbread Mix before cooking.
Farmstead Pizza
• Brush the flatbread with a pastry brush. Kids are always intrigued with “painting” food.
• “Decorate” the top of the pizza with toscano and finocchiona slices and sprinkle Brebis cheese over the top.
• Cut up the basil with kitchen shears.
*Kids may not have the proper knife skills, but they are great with kitchen shears, so hand them a pair and let them chop the basil. Kitchen shears are a great alternative to a knife for a child.
Kid-friendly option: Let them taste the ingredients before they are put on the pizza. They may be surprised at what they like. You may also add one of their favorite cheeses.
