Meet the Mountain Team: Eddie Soltys

Blackberry Mountain Adventure Guide Eddie Soltys started at Blackberry Mountain in 2018. From exploring trails, climbing rocks and interacting with all who stop by the Hub, Eddie shares parts of his story from Blackberry and beyond!

Question & Answer

What brought you to Blackberry Mountain?

A dear friend of mine told me about Blackberry Farm while we were working together in Northern California. She eventually introduced me to Mary Celeste who shared with me the dream of Blackberry Mountain. When I returned to the southeast, I visited both properties. The rest, as they say, is history.

What’s one thing that guests wouldn’t know about you?

Ever since I was young, I’ve enjoyed singing and playing any instrument I could get my hands on. I now play guitar and a bit of piano. My claim to fame would be receiving a golden ticket from J.Lo and the boys, and flying to Hollywood for American Idol.

How do you start your morning and end your day?

On a good day, my mornings start slow and intentional with a quiet devotion and a warm cup of coffee. The evenings are equally as chill. My wife, Emma, and I enjoy quality time together before calling it a day.

What is your favorite indoor/outdoor activity?

My favorite indoor/outdoor activity would have to be swimming. I grew up on the coast in southern Alabama, and ever since I was a kid I have always enjoyed being in water.

What is your favorite Blackberry moment?

My favorite Blackberry moment... it’s hard to say for certain. It would probably be a toss up between trying to keep up with Boyd, the Head Naturalist at Blackberry Mountain, as he bombs off trail in search for new waterfalls, growing my passion for the arts with Polly Ann and the amazing artists in residence who have visited or some of the truly amazing moments spent with our guests. I’ve acquired quite a few stories during my time here. So just come find me if you ever want to talk about them.

This or That

Firetower or Three Sisters

Between the Firetower and Three Sisters I would have to go Firetower. I have enjoyed my dinning experience at Three Sisters immensely, but the views at the Firetower keep me coming back... not to mention that Sunny Side Egg Bowl!

Indoor Climb or Outdoor Climb

I love climbing. Over the last 10 years I’ve climbed indoors and outdoors all across the country. Though I’d like to say my preference is outdoor climbing, I’ve come to love gym climbing and the community it supports. It’s nice to have climbing conveniently located and available year around without worrying about inclement weather or travel logistics.

Sunrise or Sunset

Both sunrise and sunset are stunning. If I had to choose, I would go with a great sunset. After I learned to drive, I remember driving down to the bay with my friends almost everyday to enjoy the sunset and dream about the future. Some days, I would go by myself just to reflect and hope for what was to come. Sunsets bring a real sense of peace and tranquility to my soul.

Cocktail or Mocktail

I have to go cocktail on this one. Although most often I prefer a solid craft brew.

Hike or Bike

As a hiking guide I feel like I’m obligated to say hike here. Jeff Knippen and Austin Schreiner, feel free to change my mind!

Taking in the Views or Experiencing the Journey

I’ve always been an advocate for enjoying the journey. My natural tendency is to want to push on ahead to get to the view, but the journey is where we learn, grow and become who we are when we arrive. It’s a daily surrender, but the journey is what I believe makes the views worth seeing.

Hiking Boots or Running Shoes

Hiking boots without question. I’m not running unless I’m being chased. Or again, if I’m trying to keep up with Boyd.
