An Unexpected Partner

If you’re asked to picture horseback riding, you may picture an exciting adventure through mountainous terrain or enchanting forest. But those who have the chance to bond with these beautiful animals often find themselves in a state of unexpected serenity. Despite their powerful stature, horses are loyal and gentle-natured partners who look to their riders for guidance while also providing a sense of support when a rider must rely on them. As mutual trust is built between horse and rider, it’s instinctual to reach inward, allowing for self-reflection, better communication and life-changing moments.

This special connection is why many have turned to equine-assisted therapy methods for emotional healing. Horses have a unique ability of sensing people’s emotions and tend to reflect that same energy back to their rider, encouraging riders to tap into their feelings and work towards inner peace. Simultaneously, seasoned horses within these programs are trusted to keep their cool in almost any situation, allowing riders to completely release the weight of outside stressors with the trust that their equine partner will carry them through it.

As they settle into the ride and let go of personal burdens, riders are introduced to healthy methods of dealing with emotional obstacles they may have never faced head-on. As self-reflection begins the healing process, horseback also opens the door for learning the importance of communication. For a prosperous relationship, a rider must interpret the horse’s mood and interact with them accordingly. Thankfully, these compassionate creatures wear their hearts on their hooves, making it easy to begin learning about non-verbal communication. Likewise, riders must calmly and clearly communicate their goals back to the horse for a successful ride. While working with their horse, it’s only natural that riders organically reach a state of clarity they may have never experienced before.

There is no doubt the connection felt between horse and rider encourages personal growth as people explore within, sometimes unintentionally, while working with these animals. Equine therapy has taken great strides in helping people learn about themselves and deal with difficult issues, and the practice continues to gain respect as more people share their stories of therapeutic breakthroughs.
