Why We Always Go Back to the Basics

In the same way that “practice makes perfect” for a skill, creating a strong foundation for your personal wellness sets you up for success and support. And even the most wellness-minded people need to remember to come back to the basics sometimes. Uncertainty and change come in many forms, and they can bring about stress even when your life is relatively comfortable and calm. We can strengthen our tools that provide peace and comfort by focusing on the tried-and-true foundations of wellness. Every day provides a unique opportunity to nourish ourselves, and only you know exactly what you need. Here are some simple, familiar ways that we can support ourselves and create a more regular and beneficial wellness routine.

  • Hydrate. Drink water first thing in the morning and throughout the day. Placing a pitcher on the counter or keeping your water bottle on top of your desk is an easy reminder and allows you to see how much water you’ve consumed. Add your favorite fruit and herbs if you want to change things up.
  • Move. Stretch, walk, run, bike, dance, do yoga, climb stairs, create an at-home or outdoor circuit. Do whatever makes you feel alive, and aim to do a little something every day. Along with the physical benefits, exercise regulates the neurotransmitters that help support mood.
  • Rest. Sleep 7-9 hours every night. Our bodies and minds thrive when we are well-rested.
  • Breathe. Whether you are over the slow-down or your life is fuller than it has ever been, take time to pause. Attention to breath through meditation or breathwork practice creates presence and a state of calm.
  • Fuel. Nourish your body with plenty of plant-based foods. Eat slowly and mindfully and enjoy the bounty of spring.
  • Create. Write, play in the garden, dig out the art supplies or tackle a house project. Artistic expression balances out our analytical brains and is a wonderful way to cultivate mindfulness.
  • Connect. Call a friend or loved one, write a letter, or recognize if this is time you’ve needed to reconnect with yourself.

A little bit of structure goes a long way. Creating a routine can be as simple as giving yourself a bedtime and drinking more water. Give yourself grace and gratitude as you explore what works best to bring yourself the nourishment you need. And don’t forget, you can always come back to the basics.
