The Blackberry Farm Pro-Am Classic explores every aspect of cycling. In the second of our series of four conversations from the 2019 Pro-Am, Robbie Ventura and Craig Lewis reminisce about their professional cycling careers and dive into conversation about the cycling community.
Robbie Ventura is the founder and owner of Vision Quest Coaching. With a talented staff of world-class coaches, VQ provides expert training programs for over 500 endurance athletes of all levels from beginner to elite, including cyclists and triathletes ranging from eight to 80 years old. Robbie was a professional cyclist for 12 years. A competitive racer on the dirt, road and track since the age of seven, Ventura amassed over 70 victories during his professional career, was a member of the U.S. World Team and rode the Track World Championships in Hamar, Norway, placing 5th in the elimination.
Craig Lewis competed professionally as a U.S. cyclist from 2007 to 2013, racing for some of the top U.S. teams and making appearances on some of the largest stages in the world. His impressive career includes a signature performance at the 2011 Giro d’Italia, where Lewis helped his U.S. team, HTC-Highroad, to a stage victory in the team time trial. Throughout his career, Lewis also competed professionally for Team TIAA CREF, Team Slipstream, TEAM COLUMBIA – HTC, and Champion System Pro Cycling Team. Lewis’ promising career was hindered by a string of untimely injuries, including one just days before the finale of the Giro d’Italia, when he broke his femur after crashing into a road sign. In 2004, while riding for TIAA–CREF, Lewis was gravely injured when he was struck by a car during an individual time trial at the Tour de Georgia. After months of rehab and physical therapy, and multiple surgeries, Lewis eventually made a full recovery – climbing all the way back to the Grand Tour stage with Team HTC Highroad. Now retired from professional cycling, Lewis continues to be involved in cycling races and events around the country. In 2017 Lewis lead his team to victory at the third annual Blackberry Farm Pro-Am Classic, earning a $10,000 donation to the charity of his choice, Pelatonia.
