Wildest Bite - Chitlins
Have you ever eaten a food that pushed you out of your comfort zone? What is the most unique or strangest thing you’ve ever eaten?
Chitlins (pig intestines). The first time I had to eat them as a child I was turned off by them. You don’t eat everyone’s chitlins. I didn’t – and don’t – eat anyone else’s but my grandmother’s or my own. Chitlins are iconic, and I grew to appreciate and honor them within my family, especially after I learned the history behind them.
Where did you eat them?
Grandma Maggie’s house.
Did you go into it willingly by ordering it, were you persuaded to try them, or were you dared?
Family pressure – it’s the original version of peer pressure. It was a slow integration into eating chitlins and coming to love them.
Were you surprised by them? Would you recommend it?
As a person who has experienced a lot of food in life, I’m surprised that I’m still drawn to chitlins, as well as the art behind cooking them. I recommend that everyone try chitlins at least twice.
Have you ordered them since or attempted to re-create them in any way?
My take on the family recipe has been on JuneBaby’s menu since we opened in 2017.
